Refocusing the NHS Estate

Submitted by Graham Kean, EC Harris, Head of Public

A ten point plan to facilitate radical cost reduction and service transformation Ahead of the spending review, we recently published a White Paper entitled 'Refocusing the NHS Estate'.  The paper sets out ten steps how the NHS can generate revenue savings of approximately £1.4 billion from its estate operations and a capital receipt of up to £2.5 billion, without impacting frontline services. These savings could be quickly reinvested to deliver better... Read More

Refocusing the NHS Estate

Submitted by Conor Ellis, EC Harris, Global Account Leader, Health

We recently published a paper entitled 'Refocusing the NHS Estate'.  It sets out ten steps how the NHS can generate revenue savings of approximately £1.4 billion from its estate operations and a capital receipt of up to £2.5 billion, without impacting frontline services.  These savings could be quickly reinvested to deliver better health outcomes more effectively.  One of the key aspects of the research focused on best practice facilities management... How to save the NHS millions through effective procurement...

Submitted by Karen Prosser, EC Harris, Partner, Health sector

The National Audit Office has issued an efficiency target of £500m to be achieved through improvements in procurement across the NHS. This figure is supported by the NHS Business Agency findings (reported last month) and our recent research Refocusing the NHS. Having regularly achieved 10% to 20% savings on capital and service costs, and up to 60% across non-clinical items for clients, we know there is significant opportunity to drive efficiencies in NHS procurement. ... Public Infrastructure needed for Arab world stability

Submitted by Andrew Jeffery, EC Harris, Location Leader, UAE

With reports of further unrest in the Arab world continuing to dominate the news agenda, it is easy to overlook one of the themes that is common and unifying to all of the protests; the dearth of public infrastructure including schools, hospitals, transportation and welfare facilities provision. If we look more closely across the wider GCC, it is clear that the region has definite room for improvement before it can claim to offer the public services that people in the developed and Western world... Patient Choice โ€“ The Middle East High-Life

Submitted by Andrew Jeffery, EC Harris, Location Leader, UAE

Unlike many European countries where national healthcare is a central provision, the Middle East has emulated, with great enthusiasm, the American-style private health insurance to fund health care provision for both nationals and expats alike. Where things differ from the norm in the Middle East, is the growing supply response, especially in the UAE, for five star hospitals – resembling and feeling more like luxury hotels than the sterile, ‘magnolia’ institutional buildings... Seizing the Opportunity

Submitted by Conor Ellis, EC Harris, Global Account Leader, Health

In late 2010 EC Harris released a paper entitled ‘Refocusing the NHS Estate’, which detailed ten steps to facilitate radical cost reduction and service transformation. ‘Seizing the Opportunity’ updates our findings. Using the latest information available, as well as including more data, we are now in a position to make direct comparisons with NHS progress over the previous 12 months and with recent trends in private sector facilities management. Overall, EC Harris... Read More

The Future of PFI

Submitted by Ed Baldwin, EC Harris, Partner, Health Sector

The recent announcement by the Treasury that they are looking for a new mechanism for delivering public assets and services must, overall, be welcomed.  Any incentive aimed to deliver improved public infrastructure which helps to kick start the economic recovery and provide growth in these challenging times must be seen as positive. However, I would question the need for a totally new model on the basis that “if it ain’t completely broke, why fix it?”  Whilst... Read More

Shaped for the Future

Submitted by Conor Ellis, EC Harris, Global Account Leader, Health

In 2008/09 there was more than 3 million m² of underused or wasted space in the NHS. In 2009/2010 this figure dropped to 2.1 million m². The latest figures released for 2010/11 show that since our last annual review the ‘wasted’ space in the NHS has been reduced by circa 210,000 m², leaving 1.898 million m² (of which 1.23 million is in the acute) underused or unused.  This is a step forward and should be celebrated, however, major financial and... Is China the country to grow older?

Submitted by Karen Prosser, EC Harris, Partner, Health sector

I've seen an article in the Economist recently talking about the changing face of Chinese society.  The article correctly identified the rapidly growing elderly population as a potential barrier to the country’s future economic growth. However, by looking at this issue in purely financial terms I thought the author underplayed a more pressing concern – the inadequacy of the country’s current healthcare facilities... Read More
